Mohs Micrographic Surgery in Arkansas
FAQ

What is Mohs Micrographic Skin Cancer Surgery?

Mohs surgery is among the most effective, most advanced skin cancer treatment available. Offering the highest treatment rates of any skin cancer therapy, Mohs is often utilized when other methods have failed to deliver results. Through this targeted procedure, skin cancer is removed layer by layer, examining tissue and repeating until healthy, cancer-free tissue is reached. Unlike other procedures, Mohs ensures skin cancer is completely removed during surgery, eliminating the chance of a recurrence.

By using these detailed mapping techniques and complete microscopic control, the Mohs surgeon can pinpoint areas involved with cancer that are otherwise invisible to the naked eye. Therefore, even the smallest microscopic roots of cancer can be removed.

The result is: 1) the removal of as little normal skin as possible and 2) the highest possibility for curing the cancer.

What are the advantages of Mohs Surgery?

What is the cure rate?

Using Mohs surgery, the percentage of cure is more than 90 percent for most skin cancers, even when other forms of treatment have failed. Other methods of treatment offer only a 50 percent chance of success if previous treatments have failed.

Step-by-Step: What to Expect During Mohs Surgery

The visible tumor and a thin margin of surrounding skin are surgically removed.

The tissue is examined under a microscope by your doctor to identify if any cancer cells remain.
If cancer is still present, more skin is removed in small increments and re-examined.
This process continues until the tissue is cancer-free—maximizing precision and preserving healthy tissue.

What to Know Before Surgery

Because of the meticulous and time-consuming nature of this process, you should plan to spend the day in our office. You should eat a good breakfast and bring a companion or some reading material with you. You will be able to drive yourself home as long as you do not receive any prescription pain medication. However, we do suggest someone drive you.

ON THE MORNING OF SURGERY
Bathe or shower your total body with Dial Antibacterial Soap using a vigorous scrub. Your skin should be thoroughly clean, as well as a thorough shampooing of the scalp with Head & Shoulders Shampoo – washing twice.

CAN I EAT BEFORE SURGERY?
Absolutely! Eat a good breakfast before your appointment. Your office visit may take awhile. We will also allow a lunch break if your procedure runs past noon.

HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE?
Please have your blood pressure checked by your family physician if requested at the time of your surgery scheduling. If your blood pressure is elevated, we cannot perform your surgery. Bring your blood pressure medication with you on the day of surgery.

ATTENTION !!
