Blu Light Treatment

Blu Light is used to treat patients with diffuse actinic keratoses of the face and scalp involving more than 15-20 lesions.  Actinic Keratoses (AK’s) are the most common precancers and are often called sun spots.

There are two steps in treating AK’s with Blu Light Therapy.  In step one, a topical solution (Levulan Kerastick) is applied to the AK.  Your provider will direct you to wait the recommended time in order to allow the solution to penetrate the targeted cells.  The solution is then absorbed by the AK cells where it is converted to a chemical that makes the cells extremely sensitive to light.

In step two, the patient is placed under the Blu Light for approximately 17 minutes.  When the AK cells are exposed to the Blu Light illuminator, a reaction occurs which destroys the AK cells.  Protective eyewear is worn during treatment.  Patients may experience sensations of burning, tingling, stinging or prickling of the treated AK’s.  These minor discomforts are temporary and should subside within a short period of time after treatment.

Patients are instructed to avoid exposing the treated lesions to sunlight and other forms of bright light for at least 48 hours.  Sunscreens will not protect against photosensitivity reactions caused by visible light during this time.
